RAISE A PUPPY
The Golden Retriever
and Labrador Retriever puppies we raise will assist a soldier
or a person
with a disability in leading a more fulfilling and independent
life. For these puppies to achieve their potential, they
must grow up in
a loving environment and be exposed to a variety of stimulating
experiences.
Puppy raisers are volunteers who agree to take a service dog in
training into their homes and socialize him or her to other dogs,
people and the world. Puppies who are not confident, social,
and well-mannered rarely make good service dogs, so your role
is crucial.
We will help you every step of the way in this rewarding task.
What is the benefit to you? You and your family will
enjoy having a puppy in your home for the first eighteen months
of its
life.
If you have a disability, but are able to be a puppy raiser, we
may be able to place the puppy you raise with you after his or
her advanced training is complete.
Puppy raisers contractually agree to:
- Care for and house a puppy from 8 weeks of age until 18 months
of age
- Feed, groom, socialize and exercise the puppy as recommended
by Paws 4 Liberty
- Enroll the puppy in puppy class and at least one training class
afterwards in order to give the puppy a chance to meet other
puppies and learn basic obedience
- File regular progress reports and outings logs
- Attend Paws 4 Liberty puppy classes or meet privately with
a Paws 4 Liberty trainer twice monthly
